My Suzuki Esteem 2000 Won't Start? help?

0 votes
My car is a suzuki esteem, 2000 i think. i've had it since 2004 and its been acting up the past few years. I've done a lot of repairs on it, fixed alternator maybe a year ago, fixed an axle a few months ago as well because oil was spilling. Last night it would not start, it just made clicking sounds. I went back inside of my house and waited a little bit, then went outside again and noticed that my remote thing for the drivers side would not correctly open the door. the lock just jiggled when i looked through the window. i had to manually open my door. the remote thingy works fine i feel because lights on my car were going on. Anyways, after opening door manually the alarm went off and i clicked remote to turn it off and it turned off. Tried to start my car again and it seems like it was trying to turn over, took key out, then tried to start again and held key down. the engine started to turn and it started finally. I am going to take it to a mechanic today possibly, i was planning to even though it eventually started last night. So, this morning i go out to check on my car to see if it will start, its about 7:30am here. I go out and my remote thing has the same problem, i open door manually again and try to start it. Its just making a clicking sound and no attempt to turn over. everything works on it, my radio turns on, lights turn on, windshield wipers turn on as well.

I dont think my battery is very old at all. the last time i had a battery problem was several months ago and they just cleaned it off and said that was the problem, also i bought a new battery a few years ago. Every so often it wont start like this, it hasnt been a huge problem though, just every so often. Does it have to do with the weather change? its very cold now and the last time it wouldnt start was when it was very very hot.

another problem i had was during my smog check about a month ago. the check engine light would not go off and i had them look into it. so the guy he turned off the computer thingy in car (sorry i dont know the terminology) he reset it and it went off and he went and did smog check, but the check engine light came back on and he said thats fine. he spoke to  me about it though and said its probably a problem with my sensor. he told me fixing the sensor is a lot of money and its probably worth more than my car to fix sensor. Do you think its the sensor? like is that the reason it wont start?

Im wondering what the problem is. its stressing me out because I cant afford to put money into this car, i've already put tons of money into it and i cant afford a new car right now. it is my first car. I just dont want a bigger problem and have to pay a lot. like i cant even afford to take it there to have them to fix it. all they will get to do is look at it and diagnose it. I've just payed other bills, but my fathers told me to take it to mechanic...just dont have money for this right now.

im trying to give as many details as i can...sorry about grammar and not knowing terminology and being all over the place. im just extremely frustrated with my car.

thanks in advance

Start with the battery, have a load test done at an auto parts store. Chances are good it has a bad cell. Expect to replace the battery every 3 years or so, after the first 2 years it has a pro-rata warranty.

Sensor replacement (depending on which one) isn't that expensive, however the thing that seperates a technician from a parts changer (which is what most mechanics are these days) is to follow through on a complete diagnosis. He will look for cheap and simple problems first before condemning complicated and expensive parts, which all of them SHOULD do but seldom will. You may benefit by taking your car to someone else as this fellow apparently didn't fix it properly the first time.
